DESIGN CHALLENGE
Create an exciting hotel in Newport, Rhode Island - a resort town synonymous with America’s Cup and Mansions and the New York Social Register - without resorting to tried and true nautical themes.

THE SOLUTION
This is a superb example of how we capitalized on our location while still communicating the Marriott brand identity.

Every inch of the hotel is fresh and original. To create a huge sculpture made up of colorful sails for the lobby atrium, we retained the Production Designer from Jurassic Park. The curvilinear theme of the sails is reinforces architecture. Polished wood and metals are reminiscent of sailing and motor yachts of the ‘30s, a playful undersea mural graces the bar while a stylized compass rose is a central theme for the carpet.

All original, all unexpected and all elements work together to create a memorable - and unique - guest experience.

Great design may be subtle, it may be playful, but uncompromising of craftsmanship and materials.

A fresh interpretation of Neptune, god of the sea guards the entry to one of the restaurants.
